Jagjit Singh is the name of a soul touching voice. 'Jag' means World and
'Jit' means Winning or One who has won over the world.
Like his name, he has won millions of hearts all
over the world. His talent of singing Ghazals in a unique style, with
his own mix of classical and western music has changed the typical way
of singing ghazals. He has given Ghazal singing a new dimension.
From his first album The Unforgettable, released in 1976 to his latest
album Muntazir. He has remained the King of Gazals for 31 years and he
is still bringing out the best.
Jagjit Singh not only conquered gazals, but he also obliged his audience
with Ebullient, effervescent and bubbly Punjabi songs. He also sang as
playback singer for Hindi and Punjabi films. His compositions for TV
serial Mirza Galib (based on the poet Mirza Galib), remain extremely
popular among aficionados.
A poet Sudarshan Faakir says, "...he developed a new
industry, The Gazal Industry, with its ancillary artistes, sound
engineers, studios and poets. Urdu poets owe him a special in their
hearts, for it was Jagjit who made it a practice to pay these lyricists
a part of his earnings"
